History of the ECE Department: 1950-1959

 

1950
The first editor of The Florida Engineer, a College of Engineering publication, is an electrical engineering student (M. J. "Don" Wiggins). Harry Owen, an EE faculty member, is one of the faculty advisors.  The first issue was published in November.
Department turns over engineering portion of radio station WRUF to the School of Journalism and Communications
PhD program in electrical engineering created
Construction of the Enginering and Industries building (later named Weil Hall) was completed.  The EE offices were located on the thrd floor and the Power Lab was located on the first floor.
1952
The Circuits and Electronics Research Laboratories established
Merwin J. Larsen becomes Department Chair
1956  
Jacquelin M. Bash is the first female EE undergraduate student
1958
First PhD degree awarded in EE to William Edward "Ed" Lear, Sr.
Department has 29 graduate students
