EEL 3472 - Electromagnetic Fields and Applications I
Catalog Description: (3 cr) Transmission line equations, electrostatics, magnetostatics, time-varying fields, plane waves, introduction to antennas and waveguides.

Course Objective: Learn the basics of electromagnetic fields and how to apply concepts to practical problems.

- EE2 - knowledge of mathematics, basic and engineering sciences necessary to analyze and design complex systems: EEL 3472 contains extensive review of and application to the calculation of electric and magnetic fields of the following mathematical tools: Vector analysis in Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates (3-dimensional geometry); differential and integral calculus including the use of special functions, such as gradient, curl, and divergence; trigonometry; complex variable theory; and phasors.
- a - an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering: This ability is developed via virtually every homework and test problem which requires the student to apply mathematical techniques to calculate electric and magnetic fields and to derive Maxwell’s equations and apply them to idealized and practical problems.
- k - an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice: Many of the assigned problems have an engineering bent, and most require numerical answers (a feature of the EEL 3472 book by Ulaby) usually involving converting the given dimensions of input units to common mks units for the calculation.
