B.S./Ph.D. Program
Background
Over the years, we have had many inquiries from our best undergraduate students about the possibility of joining the PhD program while they are still undergraduates. Allowing this option will make it possible for us to attract some of our very best undergraduate students and it will help us increase the proportion of US students in our PHD program. The program proposed below follows along the lines of our existing BS/MS program, except that the admission requirements are stricter.
Details of the proposed BS/PHD program:
The BS/PhD program makes it possible for excelling students to start working on PhD level research before completing their Bachelor's degree.
In addition, the program allows students to double count up to 12 credit hours between the BS and PhD degrees. All double counted courses must be 5000 or 6000 level courses with a grade of B or higher. These courses will count both as technical electives for the BS degree and as credit hours toward the PhD degree. The minimum admission requirements to the BS/PhD program are as follows:
- Applicants must be Electrical and Computer Engineering students with senior status (4 EG).
- Upper division GPA and overall GPA must both be at least 3.7.
- GRE scores: Verbal + Quantitative = 1200; Analytical Writing = 3.5.
- Three letters of recommendation from Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty members are required, and at least one of these letters must state that the author agrees to chair the PHD supervisory committee of the applicant.
- Applicants must have completed at least 7 (seven) EEL core courses and 2 (two) EEL Labs.
- Applicants must satisfy all admission requirements of the Graduate School, except the requirement for a Bachelor's degree.
