The Sias Scholarships will be tied to a writing contest. The contest is open to all students majoring in electrical or computer engineering with undergraduate classification. We will award a total of $4,000 in scholarship money based on the results of the contest.
F. Ralph Sias (1905-1991) graduated from the University of Florida in 1928 with a B.S.E.E. degree. During his years in the engineering field, he specialized in measurements -- electrical, mechanical, fluidics and optical. He received a total of eighteen U.S. and several foreign patents.
Essays will need to be a minimum of 1000 words and should be on one of these two topics:
1) A well advertised trend is toward outsourcing of engineering work to countries where engineering wages are lower. If you were a manager, how would you handle a decision to layoff employees in the U.S. and then hire oversees replacements? What are your responsibilities o the stockholders and to the employees?
2) Many songs are downloadable for free and the authors and performers are not compensated. How do holders of intellectual property get compensated? If this became true of software, would you pursue a career writing software?
Essays will be scored on content as well as proper English usage. Essays are due by January 31, 2006 in 230 Larsen for consideration for the scholarship money. Winners will be published in the departmental newsletter.
