Degree Programs
Master's
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers both the Master of Engineering and Master of Science degrees with thesis and non-thesis options. A student seeking the Master's degree with a thesis option is required to pass an oral final exam, perform research, and write a thesis. The non-thesis Master's student is required to pass a written final examination. Both the thesis and non-thesis degree programs require a minimum of 30 credit hours in appropriate coursework. All work counted for the Master's degree must be completed during the seven years immediately preceding the date on which the degree is to be awarded.
Engineer
The Engineer's degree is a terminal degree and is not to be considered as a partial requirement toward the Ph.D. degree. The student's objective after the Master's degree should be either the Ph.D. or the Engineer's degree. All work counted for the Engineer's degree must be completed during the five years immediately preceding the date on which the degree is to be awarded.
This degree requires a thesis and a minimum of 30 semester credit hours taken in technical work beyond a Master's degree in Engineering. This includes a maximum of 12 semester credit hours of thesis research. At least 50 percent of the course credit hours taken for the Engineer's degree must be 6000 level courses and at least 50 percent of the course credit hours must be Electrical and Computer Engineering courses.
Doctor of Philosophy
For the Ph.D. degree, at least 90 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree are required. These hours include master's degree work taken at the University of Florida or, if appropriate, up to 30 hours of master's degree work in ECE earned at another approved university. Candidates for the doctoral degree must satisfy the minimum requirements for a period of concentrated study, beyond the first 30 semester hours counted toward the doctoral program. Students must complete 30 hours in residence on the UF campus or at the Graduate Engineering and Research Center.
Joint Degrees
The department also offers joint degrees with the College of Law and the Department of Management in the College of Business Administration.
Distance Learning
Students who are unable to relocate to the Gainesville campus, may earn a master's degree through the distance learning program known as UF Edge.
