  • Congratulations to Dr. and Mrs. Shea on the birth of their daughter, December 14, 2006.
  • Dr. Scott Thompson has been named an IEEE Fellow for contributions to common metal oxide semiconductor technology for high-volumne manufacturing, December 2006.
  • The paper co-authored by Dr. Yuguang Michael Fang and his student Mr. Hongqiang Zhai entitled, "Impact of routing Metrics on Path Capacity in Multi-rate and Multi-hop wireless Ad Hoc networks," received the Best Paper Award at the 14th IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols, November 12-15, 2006.
  • Paper, "Timing with dirty templates for low-resolution digital UWB receivers," coauthored by Huilin Xu and Dr. Liuqing Yang, received the Best Student Paper Award at the 2006 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband, September 24-27 in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Dr. Tao Li receives 2006 IBM Faculty Award
  • SubjuGator comes in 1st Place in the AUVSI and ONR's 9th International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competitions.  This is their second successive international championship in this event.
  • Dr. Dapeng Oliver Wu was invited to serve as the founding editor-in-chief of a new journal, Advances in Multimedia, beginning July 2006
  • Dr. Mark Law wins 2006 Aristotle Award, July 24, 2006 . The award was presented to Dr. Law on October 9, 2006.
  • ECE launches newly redesigned website.  Users should reset their bookmarks.
  • Dr. Dapeng Wu's paper, "Energy Efficient Cooperative Rate Adaptation in IEEE 802.11-based Multi-hop Networks," with K. Wng, F. Yang, Q. Zhang and Y. Xu, receives QShine 2006 Best Paper Award for the Third International Conference on Quality of Service in Heterogeneous Wired/Wireless Networks (QShine 2006)  to be held August 7-9 in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
  • Jianwu Xu, PhD student under the direction of Dr. Jose Principe, is participating in the summer program at the RIKEN Brain Science Insstitute in Japan, June-August 2006. The RIKEN Institute, near Tokyo, is a world renowned neuroscience research institute that emphasizes interdisciplinary brain reearch.
  • Tristan Cossio, PhD student under the direction of Dr. Clint Slatton, was awarded an internship with the US Naval Surface Warfare Center for summer 2006 and a prestigious NASA Graduate Student Research Program fellowship for Fall 2006.
  • Dr. Jose Principe to receive the 2006 Gabor Award from the International Neural Network Society
  • Dr. Tao Li receives Microsoft Research Trustworthy Computing Curriculum 2005 RFP Award
  • James Poe, selected to receive prestigous NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Award for 2006.  Poe is a PhD student under the direction of Dr. Tao Li.
  • Dr. Rizwan Bashirullah receives NSF Career Award
  • Dr. Michael Fang selected as a UF Research Foundation professor.
  • Dr. Vladimir Rakov to receive the 2005 Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing for Geophysical Research Letters .  This prestigious award will be presented at the American Geophysical Union Joint Assembly in May.
  • A new joint research center is currently under development at UF and George Washington University.  For more information, www.chrec.org

  • Lightning expert Dr. Vladimir Rakov was quoted in a January 6, 2006 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story about how lightning might have been the cause of the explosion that killed 12 West Virginia coal miners. Rakov also was interviewed Jan. 6 for “ABC World News Tonight” on the same topic.
  • Dr. Jenshan Lin was elected to the AdCom of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society for a three year term.
