IMG – Interdisciplinary Microsystems Group
The Interdisciplinary Microsystems Group (IMG) is a college-wide multi-departmental education and research program of the College of Engineering at the University of Florida. IMG operates under the direction of Drs. Lou Cattafesta, Hugh Fan, and Mark Sheplak of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Drs. Toshikazu Nishida and Huikai Xie of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Research at IMG focuses on the design and analysis of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), with an emphasis on fluid mechanics, acoustic, and vibration applications. MEMS are an extension of microelectronics technology that incorporate mechanical, optical, fluidic, acoustical, and biological systems using semiconductor processing technology. MEMS technology is used in the creation of micro-scale sensors and actuators. Typical commercial applications are ink-jet printer heads, accelerometers, and microfluidic pumps.
