Minimum Admission Requirements

Master's Degree:

  • There is no strict minimum required score for the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE. Admitted students have an average GRE score of 315. If you took the GRE before August1, 2011, please use ETS's GRE concordance tables to convert your score to the new scoring system.
  • GRE Analytical Writing Score of 3.5
  • Undergraduate upper-division grade point average of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00
  • If applicable, scores from an English Language Proficiency test 
  • Three letters of reference from faculty of the university where you received your degree
  • Statement of Purpose

Ph.D. Degree:

  • There is no strict minimum required score for the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE. Admitted students have an average GRE score of 315. If you took the GRE before August 1, 2011, see the master's degree requirements above for information on converting your score.
  • GRE Analytical Writing score of 3.5
  • Master's degree (or equivalent) with a graduate work grade point average of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00; or bachelor's degree with outstanding academic record
  • If applicable, scores from an English Language Proficiency test
  • Three letters of reference from faculty of the university where you received your degree
  • Statement of Purpose

English Language Skill Requirements

To be admitted to the UF Graduate School, non-exempt (see English Testing Exemptions section below) non-US and Puerto Rican applicants must meet the required minimum on the verbal portion of the GRE, plus one of these English language tests:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): 77.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet-Based): 80.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Paper-Based): 550.
  • Verbal GRE: 140 for test dates on or after August 1, 2011; 320 for tests taken before August 1, 2011.

English Testing Exemptions

Non-US and Puerto Rican graduate applicants can be exempted from the IELTS,MELAB, TOEFL or verbal GRE requirements if:

  1. They have official proof of completing the UF English Language Institute (ELI) prior to applying.
  2. They are citizens of a country where English is an official language.
  3. They have transcripts showing at least one year of enrollment as a full-time student at a college or university in a country where English is an official language, within one year before applying to UF. Please note: Time spent in ESL (English as a Second Language) programs do not qualify for this exemption.

General Notes

  • Admission decisions are NOT based solely on test scores or grade point average. All parts of the application are taken into consideration before a final decision is made. We therefore encourage all interested applicants to apply.
  • Students who do not meet the minimum requirements for the Ph.D. degree are automatically considered for admission to the Master's degree.
  • All GRE scores must come from a single GRE exam. GRE scores from different GRE exams cannot be combined to meet the admission requirement. 
  • UF's ETS institution code is 5812. No department code is required for your ETS test scores.
