ECE Seminar Speaker Dr. Srikantan Nagarajan

Seminar Talk Title:   “Advances in Functional Brain Imaging at Rest and During Speaking"

Abstract:  I will introduce the challenges of functional brain imaging of neural oscillations with non-invasive recordings of electromagnetic signals (MEG and EEG) from the brain and in integrating this information with other imaging modalities. In particular, I will discuss recent probabilistic graphical modeling and Bayesian inference algorithms that we have developed that overcome many of the challenges in this area. I will then provide examples of imaging resting-state oscillations with MEG. Finally I will discuss applications of functional brain imaging studies of speaking and how these experiments inform computational models for speech motor control.

Short Biography

Srikantan Nagarajan, PhD, is an IEEE Fellow and a Professor in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco, and is the Director of the Biomagnetic Imaging Laboratory. He has joint appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences and in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He obtained his BE in Electrical Engineering at the University of Madras, India, and he completed his MS in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Nagarajan received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship from UCSF. His research interests are in translational neuroscience and neural engineering, including understanding human brain plasticity associated with learning and disease, and determining neural mechanisms of controlling speech. Towards these goals he focusses on the development and refinement of multimodal structural and functional brain imaging and brain computer interfaces, for diagnosis and prognostic assessment in various patient populations.
