Congratulations to Dr. Michael Fang, who was elected to serve on the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE. He will serve a term from Jan. 1, 2018 through Dec. 31, 2020. Dr. Fang’s nomination was based upon his stature within the IEEE community and in recognition of his outstanding contributions.

Congratulations are due to Seahee Hwangbo, an ECE Ph.D. student under the supervision of Dr. Yong-Kyu Yoon, who has been awarded two prestigious awards—the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Doctoral Research Grant, and second place in the IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS) Student Paper Competition.
The IEEE AP-S Doctoral Research Grant provided Ms. Hwangbo a $2,500 grant and was awarded in April of 2016.

Karim Oweiss, Ph.D., professor of electrical and computer engineering, biomedical engineering and neuroscience, will also study the mechanisms by which cranial nerve stimulation can affect brain activity. Instead of using the standard microelectrode sensors, which don’t last as long as some longer learning processes might take, his lab will use advanced optical imaging.

Daniel Collotte and Kevin Runda, both graduates of the University of Florida Electrical Engineering program placed third at the annual Texas Instruments (TI) Innovation Challenge. The team wowed the judges and Tiers with their universal interface cube and was awarded $5,000. There were over 800 participants in the competition! The department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is proud of this accomplishment.

Five UF Electrical Engineering students win third place at the International Microwave Symposium which took place in Tampa, FL . The team is pictured from left to right: Tien-Yu Huang, Jianxuan Tu, Chien-Ming Nieh, Changyu Wei, Meiyu Li . They were recognized for the High Sensitivity Radar competition with a final system weighing only 6 grams that featured a miniature antenna and coupler.

Ojika, a fourth-year computer engineering Ph.D. candidate at the University of Florida, was recently notified of his being awarded a $20K Microsoft Azure Research Award. We congratulate PhD student, Robert Karam, for receiving the best paper award at the IEEE BioCAS (Biomedical Circuits and Systems) Conference (www.biocas2016.org) in Shanghai, China. The paper is titled “Ultralow-power Data Compression for Implantable Bladder Pressure Monitor: Algorithm and Hardware Implementation” This was a collaborative project with Robert KaramDr. Bhunia from UF and researchers from the L. Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and Cleveland Clinic. IIRC the conference had about 150 accepted papers, 300+ submissions, and 3 best paper awards.

Alumni Accomplishment: Changzhi Li, a former student of Dr. Jenshan Lin, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Texas Tech University. Changzhi just received news that he will be awarded both the ASEE Terman Award and the IEEE-HKN Outstanding Young Professional Award for 2014. On August 7th 2014, NSF awarded a new Industry/University Collaborative Research Center (I/UCRC) on Multi-functional Integrated System Technology (MIST). The MIST Center is led at UF under the direction of Dr. Toshi Nishida and Dr. David Arnold, with partner site at UCF led by Dr. Peter Yuan and Dr. Joe Cho. The 5-year Phase-I MIST Center funding consists of $557,500 from NSF. Total projected 5-year funding including industry memberships is $4,800,000.

WECE celebrated the arrival of new students with a welcome brunch! It was attended by 40 new students to the ECE department. Delicious food was served and students had the opportunity to socialize and learn about the wealth of support within the organization and the department.
WECE plans several extracurricular activities and social events throughout the year.

Dr. Michael Fang co-chaired the 33rd IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM) held in Toronto, Canada, 27 April-2May, 2014, with attendance over 800 people all around globe. INFOCOM is considered to be the top networking conference sponsored by IEEE with acceptance rate below 20%. This year's INFOCOM has received over 1600 papers with accept rate 19%.

Graduate student Daniel Kotovsky recently spent the month of January in Antarctica at McMurdo and South Pole Stations as part of Dr. Robert Moore’s research group. Daniel was onsite to perform yearly maintenance and make sure the receivers at each site would run through the long Antarctica winter.

Prof. John Shea received the Ellersick Award from the IEEE Communicaitons Society for the best paper at the 2013 Military Communications Conference (MILCOM) in San Diego. The award is for the paper "Graph Matching-Based Topology Reconfiguration Algorithm for Systems of Networked Autonomous Vehicles." The paper is authored by ECE postdoc Dr. Leenhapat Navaravong, Prof. Shea, Dr. Eduardo Pasiliao, Jr. of the Air Force Research Laboratory, and Prof. Warren Dixon.
