Statement on Racist Violence  and Injustice

Dear ECE Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I, like President Fuchs,  HWCoE Dean Abernathy, and Graduate School Dean Frierson, stand together with the Gator community in condemning the recent senseless acts of racist violence  and injustice. These events are troubling all of us. ECE Florida reaffirms our deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all that we do. We say it clearly—there is no place for hatred or discrimination at the University of Florida.

Our university, college and departments are continuing to focus on concrete steps aimed at improving the climate for everyone in our community. Our goal is to better provide an exceptional academic environment achieved through the diverse experiences and backgrounds of our students, faculty, and staff. Inclusion,  Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Committees at the university, college and department levels have been established in recent years to lead these efforts. This work will continue, with a new sense of urgency.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you have. And please share with us suggestions you might have about how to increase  inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in our community.

We want everyone in the ECE community to feel welcome, safe, and at home. We can, and will, do better.

As a first step, I heartily endorse Dean Abernathy’s message encouraging every Gator Engineer to take significant time to listen, learn, and reflect.

Sincerely,

John Harris
ECE Department Chair
