History of the ECE Department: 1930-1939

 

1930
Dean John R. Benton died on January 8, 1930.  The 21st volume of the UF yearbook, Seminole, was dedicated to him.
1932  
First EE Master of Science degree awarded
Colonel Blake R. Van Leer becomes dean
1933  
Department continues to have the largest graduating class of the College of Engineering.
1934
Department has cooperative project with University of Puerto Rico pertaining to statics with particular reference to hurricane disturbances.
Department continues to head State Radio Station WRUF and Station W4XAD under the Electronics Laboratories
Department has three laboratories - the Dynamo Laboratory, Precision Laboratory, and the Communications Laboratory
1936    
Florida Industries' Co-operative Plan began.   EE students could co-op with Florida Power & Light Company or Tampa Electric Company.
EE students participated in the first Engineers' Fair, held on May 8, 1936, with a thinking machine.
1937  
EE professor and chair, Joseph Weil, succeeded Blake Van Leer as the Dean of the College of Engineering
1939  
The U. S. Navy, U. S. Weather Bureau, and the Works Progress Administration invested in the EE Department through contracts in the area of defense.
