Gordon Rule

The Gordon Rule requirement consists of two parts: communication and computation. The communication component requires that the student complete course work that involves substantial writing. In order to graduate a student must complete, with a grade of C or higher, courses that involve substantial writing totaling 24,000 words.

AP examination credit in English, history, art history, government and politics, music theory, and psychology each count as 6,000 words toward the Gordon Rule requirement.

Engineering students will automatically satisfy 6,000 words of the Gordon Rule requirement through ENC 2210. The remaining 18,000 words should be satisfied through the humanities and social/behavioral science courses. Students are encouraged to choose those courses carefully in order to minimize credits. As an example, ARC 1701C is a humanities (H), an international diversity (I), and a 6,000 word Gordon Rule course.

The computation component requires that the student complete, with a grade of C or higher, six credits in a mathematics or mathematics-related courses at or above the level of college algebra. Engineering students automatically satisfy this requirement through the calculus sequence.
