Semiconductor Laser Research Laboratory
The laser research effort is concerned with the technology and physics of quantum well (QW) diode lasers. One of the technology goals is to develop better/cheaper methods for determining the quality of as-grown QW laser material now available from various foundries around the world. Another goal is to develop cheaper/more reproducible methods for processing the material so that it can be converted into high quality diode laser chips suitable for use in various packaging configurations. One of the goals of the physics effort is to continue to improve our understanding of the basic carrier transport and photon generating mechanisms in QW p-n junction materials. Another goal is to develop novel device concepts involving periodic structures incorporated into the QW laser waveguides. The overall goal is to combine all of the above into the design and development of novel diode lasers which are superior in one or more respects to those that now exist.
